Emergency Preparedness Basics: Before, During and After

Emergency plans should be built around decisions people must make under stress.

The practical view

Start with realistic hazards, warning methods, communication, protective actions, evacuation/shelter, accountability, emergency roles and people needing assistance. Then add supplies, drills, recovery and improvement. A plan is not mature until people know what it means and it has been practiced.

What to do with the information

Use Ready.gov, local emergency-management guidance, OSHA resources for workplaces and the National Weather Service for hazard-specific weather guidance.
