The practical view
TRIR helps normalize recordable-case frequency across different workforce sizes and hours. The basic formula is recordable cases × 200,000 ÷ total hours worked. It is useful for trend and comparison, but it should never be treated as a complete picture of risk. A low rate can coexist with serious uncontrolled hazards, and a single case can move the rate dramatically in smaller workforces.
What to do with the information
Use TRIR with exposure-focused leading indicators, serious-risk reviews, investigation quality, corrective-action aging and field verification. Always confirm recordability and hours before reporting.
